Drought Research

Hansen, C.V. (1997). Major Components of Flow in the Republican River During Drought Conditions From Near Hardy, Nebraska to Concordia, Kansas. U.S. Geological Survey, Fact Sheet 234-96. This fact sheet discusses the stream flow in the Republican River from the Nebraska-Kansas stateline to Milford Lake during the drought from March 1988 through June 1992. A drought condition in the river’s drainage basin directly affects Milford Lake because it's the main source of inflow for water users in the area.  The water may be used for agricultural, industrial, and municipal purposes.

Wu, H., Soh, L., Samal, A., & Chen X. (2006). Trend Analysis of Streamflow Drought Events in Nebraska. Water Resources Management, 22 (4), 145-164. The study looked at statistical characteristics on streamflow drought event parameters and detected temporal trends in the streamflow drought. It was conducted on three different time periods and looked at drought in terms of frequency, duration and severity.

The Republican River is completely dry on July 25, 2005.
